Skin Needling

An alternative technique for the treatment of wrinkles

Needling is a well known procedure used to help the human body soften and fill wrinkles. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons, along with Permanent Cosmetic Professionals, are using the technique worldwide.

The technique involves using a tattoo gun to systematically insert a special needle 1 to 2 millimeters into the skin, (just through the top layer). This is less harmful to the skin than laser re-surfacing and dermabrasion because those procedures destroy the epidermis (the top layer of skin). With Skin Needling, only the wrinkles are treated; the healthy skin between wrinkles remains untouched.

The body's reaction to Skin Needling is similar to its reaction to laser treatment, creating a build-up of collagen in the treated area, just below the surface of the skin. This build-up serves to fill the deeper areas of the wrinkles, normalizing the skin surface. This is a natural process.

Skin Needling does not "inject" anything into the body. There is no pigment involved in Skin Needling - you are not getting a tattoo. The procedure stimulates the body's own responses, causing it to fill the "valleys" of the wrinkles with collagen fibers, leaving the skin smoother and younger looking.

The procedure does require specialized knowledge and equipment. Hopie is well trained in the technique and her decades as a tattoo artist, combined with her nurse's training (she's a licensed nurse) provide a safe and effective - and lasting - result.  It is simple and safe and takes only a few minutes.

Results are not instantaneous, however. The build-up of collagen, below the surface of the skin, will continue for months and the skin will become progressively smoother. After six to nine months you will have achieved maximum results.

Immediately following the procedure, the skin will be somewhat puffy and irritated. This is a normal response. The numerous insertions of the needle are a micro-trauma and the body will respond, sending blood to the area to promote healing. Icing can be used to minimize swelling and provide a soothing sensation, but most people will not find this necessary. Skin Needling is far less irritating than other procedures.

We recommend application of a vitamin A salve, or an antibiotic ointment (like Bacitracin,) for a week or so after the procedure. This will provide a healthy environment, allowing the body to heal nicely. You can read one plastic surgeon's experience with needling by clicking here.   (this link opens another window)

The cost of Skin Needling is amazingly affordable - especially when compared to laser procedures and dermabrasion. Come in and talk with Hopie, or give us a call. You'll be glad you did!
